This is a glossary that contains the meaning of scientific words about light and optics that were learned.
angle of incidence
noun
The angle which an incident line or ray makes when it's perpendicular to the surface at the point of incidence.
Example: Similarly, the angle of incidence was kept at right angles, as tilting the filter would have resulted in a shorter wavelength shift.
es: ángulo de incidencia
angle of reflection
noun
The angle made by a reflected ray perpendicular to the reflecting surface.
Example: Their angle of reflection and velocity were then tested against a version of Snell's Law, which proved inconclusive.
es: ángulo de reflexión
illuminance
noun
The amount of luminous flux per unit area.
Example: Add or change lights to provide more even illuminance.
es: iluminancia
luminous
adjective
Relating to light as it is perceived by the eye, rather than in terms of its actual energy.
Example: The second of these is the density of the universe; this is much harder to measure due to the non-luminous properties of dark matter.
es: luminoso
opaque
adjective
Not able to be seen through; not transparent.
Example: He was melting Cholesteryl Benzoate and found that it changed from a solid to an opaque liquid and upon further heating underwent another change and became a clear liquid.
es: opaco
penumbra
noun
The partially shaded outer region of the shadow cast by an opaque object.
Example: These dimensions are determined by the spacecraft's penumbra.
es: penumbra
refracted ray
noun
A ray of light traveling in another medium, with change in direction is the refracted ray.
Example: The rays of the setting sun are refracted by the atmosphere to curve slightly downwards. At each surface, a ray splits into partially reflected and partially refracted rays.
es: rayo refractado
translucent
adjective
Allowing light, but not detailed shapes, to pass through; semitransparent.
Example: Obsidian (a dark, semi-translucent volcanic glass of the same composition as rhyolite) was one of the most important materials in Aztec warfare.
es: translúcido
transparent
adjective
Allowing light to pass through so that objects behind can be distinctly seen.
Example: If a thin transparent spacer is placed between two semi-reflective coatings, multiple reflections and interference can be used to select a narrow frequency band, producing an interference filter.
es: transparente
umbra
noun
The fully shaded inner region of a shadow cast by an opaque object, especially the area on the earth or moon experiencing the total phase of an eclipse.
Example: The notions of the penumbra and umbra are important in considering eclipses.
